Great Ocean Road, Things to do

The Great Ocean Road, a driving experience

If you can get focused on the driving experience ahead of you on the Great Ocean Road, instead of thinking about it as 243km of road skirting the Victorian coastline, you are in for one hell of an experience.

The road challenges your concentration as a driver with its sea Vista's on one side of the road and tree canopy and sheer cliff face on the other, as its winds it way along the coast, when I say coast this road is right on top of the surf coast, that is why I recommend you go as a passenger or with a tour operator first time to take it all in. A good day trip would be Melbourne to Lorne or Apollo Bay. This drive has all the different driving aspects; from Airey Inlet to Eastern View is one long straight run with fantastic beach views or from Lorne to Apollo Bay is exhilarating as it winds up and down through the cuttings. Then there is the part of the drive where you discover natures natural wonders and landmarks, like the  Otway National Park with its 13,000 hectare of rainforest that frames the Great Ocean Road as it runs west from Apollo Bay were also the Old Otway Lighthouse can be found. Then there is one of Australia's most spectacular stretches of coastline, the 27km stretch of the Port Campbell National Park, which runs from Princetown through Port Campbell to Peterborough where you will find the stunning and distinctive outcrops of Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge, The Grotto and the Twelve Apostles. Finally, your journey will conclude at Warrnambool, which is known as the nursery for the Southern Right Whale. Here they stay for many weeks, allowing the calves to feed for their journey back to the sub-antarctic waters  At Logan Beach, there is a specially constructed whale viewing platform allowing visitors to view the mothers with their young.

Great Ocean Road Attractions

Some of the more popular attractions of the Great Ocean Road would be the surf beaches, and Bells Beach, Torquay,  is a surfing icon, depending on the size of the swell the wave can break in several places on the reef, including Centerside, Rincon, Outside Bells and Bells' Bowl. Have a whale of a time watching for the majestic creatures that frequent Portland Bay, Cape Nelson and Cape Bridgewater. The Southern Ocean waters are a year round whale watching destination, and there are many vantage points to watch from land as Blue Whales & Southern Right Whales frolic in waters along the Great Ocean Road

Art and culture Discover the regional galleries that feature local, Australian and international artists or Theatres that are some oldest and grandest theatres in Victoria.

Family activities there are plenty to do with the whole family, that are truly Great Ocean Road activities and events

Aireys Inlet Victoria Australia

Great Ocean Road Destination

Aireys Inlet

Located on the Great Ocean Road,  the destination of Aireys Inlet approximately 120km south-west of Melbourne. Situated between the towns of Anglesea and Lorne Aireys Inlet like a lot of towns on the Great Ocean Road destinations, it sits between the scenic backdrop of the Great Otway's National Park and the beautiful beaches and spectacular cliffs of its rugged coastline. Not an overly big town, it does offer visitors a feel serenity and tranquillity because of its location in a picturesque river valley. it also boasts a variety of accommodation types nature attractions and lay back cafes

Aireys Inlet Victoria Australia

Aireys Inlet has the relatively small populace, however, like most coastal towns it is bolstered many times over by holidaying visitors in the summer. As for surf beach's the main beach would be Fairhaven, a few minutes away from the town. Apart from Fairhaven, along those golden miles of beach is Moogs Creek and Spout Creek both are for surfing while their beaches near the town for beach activities.Eastern Views is also near to Aireys Inlet here you will find the site of the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, commemorating the construction of the road as a memorial to those that lost their lives during World War 1. A landmark and attraction is the lighthouse that sits on the scenic and rocky outcrop of Split Point. Built in 1891, there are guided tours available during weekends and holidays, other great attraction would be to take a  Trail Ride, to give you a different view of Great Ocean Road, or do some coastal walking that takes you along the coastline. This is a beach town, so you're never far from the ocean whichever accommodation you stay at, Most accommodation can be found dotted around the township along the Great Ocean Road and the self-contained accommodation being the most popular accommodation on offer.
