Melbourne Culture

Melbourne is positively brimming with an eclectic mix of artistic and cultural events. Contemporary art fairs, international film festivals, writer’s events, jazz, comedy, theatre, dance, opera and ballet, abound within the inner and outer precincts of this fair City.

Melbourne Art Precinct

The arts scene is thriving, with more than 100 galleries to be discovered throughout Melbourne. The most notable; being the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), situated in St Kilda Road and Federation Square; showcasing legendry Australian and international artists. It adjoins the Victorian Arts Centre, which delivers Opera Australia, along with such timeless productions, as the Australian Ballet regularly performs; ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ ‘Swan Lake’ and the ‘Nutcracker,’ often with chic modern adaptations. The Melbourne International Arts Festival is on for 17 days in October, and the Melbourne Arts Fair July to August.

Melbourne - The Festival City

The Melbourne Jazz Festival (April-May) is probably the largest jazz festival in the southern hemisphere, with a splendid line up of national and international artists performing at various first class venues.

The Spiegeltent (October-December), an extremely popular and an ‘absolutely must see,’ comes complete with live music, cabaret, often sensationally funny comedy skits and some almost death defying acts of human strength, with quirky and very talented performers. The Spiegeltent is a delight in itself, the ultimate in cabaret. A rare custom made tent of wood, mirrors, canvas, leaded glass and velvet, created in the early 20th century. Marliene Dietrich sang in one in the 1930’s, and only a handful remain today.

At the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (April), you can laugh your way through 200 shows and 2200 performers over 26 days. It is considered one of the largest comedy festivals globally.

The Melbourne International Design Festival (July), delivers 50 mainly free public events, to promote design and an understanding of design principles. This extremely popular event has an additional annual Speaker Series with lectures delivered by international personalities.

August brings the Melbourne Writer's Festival, providing 250 events over ten days. The Festival Marquee provides opportunities for book buying, signings, debates and a whole lot more. It is held at Federation Square.

Film lovers will have the opportunity to feast their eyes and ears on films of all genres from over 50 countries, for 17 days in July, when the Melbourne International Film Festival comes to town. The event is accentuated by a diversity of celebrations throughout Melbourne’s CBD. It is the largest showcase of new Australian cinema, and also delivers contemporary, often challenging films from around the globe.

And last but not least the Melbourne Fringe Festival (September-October), delivers innovative theatre, dance, circus, comedy, and visual arts. This is a unique program comprising 4000 artists, 290 shows delivering a remarkable range of productions by some of the finest Australian talent.

Melbourne’s arts and cultural festivals and events strive to bring the very best artistic talent to the people. The popularity of these events seems to steadily expand year after year. The events mentioned here, are just a few tips pointing out of an exceedingly large iceberg, designed to entertain, challenge and delight its audience.
