Plenty of things to do in Melbourne

The changing nature of Melbourne Weather means lots of things to do.

The city of Melbourne is renowned for its changeable weather and is often said to have four seasons in one day, which means that if it does rain the skies could just as easily clear and the sunshine a couple of hours later. Luckily, there is plenty of Things to do in Melbourne to keep you occupied whatever the weather in Australia’s unofficial capital of culture, cool and food!

Visit a museum

Another Things to do in Melbourne is to visit the fantastic museums covering a huge variety of interests, from the evocative Immigration Museum to the family-friendly Scienceworks, to the interactive National Sports Museum, to the huge and all-encompassing Melbourne Museum. There are plenty of smaller, independent museums which are well worth a visit too, including Charlie’s Arthurs Seat Auto Museum, which is packed full of vintage cars and motorbikes; the Gold Treasury Museum, housed in the former vaults of the Treasury which previously stockpiled the treasures unearthed in Victoria’s Gold Rush; and the wonderful Tram Museum.

Melbourne loves a good market and there’s one for everybody. For vintage finds, try the North Melbourne Market in the north of the city, Blackbird Market in Fitzroy, The Lost and Found Market in Collingwood, and Chapel St Bazaar. Foodies should head to South Melbourne Market, the city’s oldest continuing market, which is packed with stalls offering all sorts of local goodies. Whilst there, check out SO: ME Space, an area dedicated to up-and-coming local designers.

Read a book over a coffee in a bookshop cafe

Melbourne’s cafe culture is world-renowned and there’s nothing better than curling up with a cup of steaming coffee and a good book whilst it pours it down with rain outside. The homely Booktalk Cafe in Richmond allows you to take one of their hundreds of second-hand books to your table to read whilst you sip a flat white and nibble on a focaccia. After browsing the books in the impressive State Library of Victoria, stretch out in one of the booths in the adjoining Mr Tulk, the walls of which are lined with kooky volumes.

Explore the vertical city

Many of Melbourne’s buildings are truly beautiful but are rarely explored other than as a means to get somewhere else.
